China has set up a professional committee focusing on governance of artificial intelligence (AI) security in a bid to build a sustained foundation for the sound development of the emerging industry, according to the country's cyber security association.

On Thursday, an inaugural meeting was held in Beijing for the AI security governance committee under the Cyber Security Association of China (CSAC). The new committee is tasked to explore a new comprehensive AI security governance model to support Chinese AI industry development, according to an online post by the CSAC.

The CSAC said the committee will focus on the development of innovative technology, industrial cooperation, and transformations aided by AI innovations, and constantly improve AI security governance regime, as well as data security, privacy protection and intellectual property protection.

The CSAC will enhance the operational support and build the professional committee as the professional and authoritative organization on AI security governance, said Zhao Zeliang, deputy director of the Cyberspace Administration of China, at the inaugural meeting.

The committee was launched by National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China, Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Alibaba Cloud and Huawei.

The committee's first group of members included 58 organizations from universities, research institutes and enterprises involved in AI.
